Nara Prefecture AJET Branding

This t-shirt was designed for individuals on the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme living in Nara, Japan. The design reflects the many elements that make life in Nara great: a tame deer of Nara Park is in the forefront wearing buddhist prayers beads, to illustrate the area's rich religious history. In the background are famous landmarks such as Todaiji Temple, Kofuku-ji, Kashihara Shrine, and Mount Hakkyo, the tallest mountain in Kansai. Surrounding these images are Japanese maple leaves and sakura blossoms, symbolozing the passage of time within the beautiful koyo (autumn leaf) scenes of fall and the beautiful cherry blossoms view in Yoshino. This is all nested inside a frame of the Buddhist lotus symbol, which further emphasizes Nara as the religious heart of ancient Japan.

This design is reminiscent of Art Noveau as a play on the movement's inspiration from Japanese woodblock printing.
In harmony with this logo, the Art Noveau theme was expanded to the monthly prefectural newsletter, Deer Reader. This design choice, an aesthetic fusion of the East and West, emphasizes cooperation between the countries that make up the JET Program and Japan.
