College project; working with branding and packaging.
The project aim was to design a brand and create packaging for a made up product with god like powers, I had been assigned the god 'Kuei Xing' god of examinations. Apart from being given a god to work on there were no limitations and I could create whatever I wanted. I really enjoyed the freedom of this project and loved working with typography and illustration. I tried to make the packaging look as old as possible using textures, retro typography and quirky illustrations.
As my chosen God was the Chinese God of examinations I decided to go for a novelty item, I then researched into novel toys and gadgets and came across some old 'X-Ray Specs' ads in a kids magazine from the 50's. I liked how it had a rough kinda look. The design had been printed onto the brown paper of the magazine, then I researched into artist like Esther Aarts and began get an idea of what my design should look like.
I created the illustrations by hand in my sketchbook and then scanned them into both Photoshop and Illustrator to edit the colours and the lines. My media was very basic and consisted only of pencils, fineliners and acrylic paints. I experimented with colours and textures using the paints to add depth and even tried using the technique of Lino-cutting to create a typographic outcome.
I used mind maps and other methods of idea generation to create the name and overall look of the brand, with help from my Tutors I was able to narrow down the search and came up with the name 'i Sight'. I used a website called Lost Type Co-Op and downloaded several typefaces including 'Wisdom Script' for my logo, this website is fantastic and I would recomend it to anyone who wants well designed vintage style typefaces.
