Masters of Postmodernism

OPPORTUNITY

Create a set of four DVDs for a Plexifilm documentary series.

SOLUTION

This DVD set focuses on the masters of Post Modernism. The DVDs in this set needed to show cohesiveness while also highlighting the styles and philosophies of each designer. The chosen concept was to view postmodern design as a science. This allowed a connection between the four masters by assigning each a scientific role based on their personal approach to design.
Each skulls is related to the designer's scientific profession and approach to design. The colors relate to the primary function of the lobe of the brain that they are assigned (see Insert)

Art chantry's skull has a beard to represent his appearance and the work that he references.

Stefan Sagmeister's skull has a brain because he primarily deals with the personal psychology and emotion behind design.

Peter Saville's skull can be seen as either a pirate skull and crossbones or a toxic symbol. Saville deals in modality, and the meaning we associate with designs and symbols.

James Victore's skull has it's mouth open, as he is committed to helping designers use their honest voice no matter what anyone else thinks.
Art Chantry is assigned the temporal lobe of the brain. Its primary function is memory. This fits Chantry's profile as he almost exclusively references past styles.

Stefan Sagmeister's is assigned the frontal lobe. This lobe is the center for pleasure and pain. Full strength emotions are what Stefan Sagmeister preaches. The more transparently honest your design, the more people will relate to it.

Peter Saville's is assigned the occipital lobe. One of its primary functions is interpreting the things that we see. Peter Saville's work is concerned with the meaning associated with the outer shell of design.

James Victore is assigned the parietal lobe. The parietal lobe is one of the main centers of language in the brain. Victore's emphasis on personal voice makes this lobe the correct fit for him.

Masters of Postmodernism

By viewing Postmodernism as a science, I have matched each designer with a scientific profession that best resembles his design process.
