Production of Genet's "The Maids"

Production stills taken by Rachel Shane
The Maids, like many of Genet’s works, tells the story of individuals desperate to break out of the suffocating confines they were born into. Their only hope of escape– taking the imaginative leap into a part they were not born to play.
By taking Jean Genet’s French thriller and transposing it to early Jazz Era New Orleans, we were able to illuminate the play’s complex class struggle through a distinctly American lens that audiences here could easily identify with.
Design team included: Keven Lock (scenic design), David Sexton (lighting design), and M. Meriwether Snipes (costume design).
