History Channel (MA Project) - Branding | Advertising

The brief was to re-brand the History TV channel and re-imagine it for a younger audience. Additionally I wanted to re-engage a largely depleted number of genuine history fans who don't watch the channel anymore due to the programming. In recent years, the channel has resorted to playing shows such as "Ice Road Truckers", "Ancient Aliens" and "Pawn Stars". It's safe to say this isn't history in the traditional sense of the word!

The current branding for the channel is very outdated and doesn't translate to young audience. My research showed that it comes across as very harsh and - more importantly - boring.

I worked on a number of concepts for the project; from vintage holiday posters ("Greetings from History!"), using sediment-style layers (in reference to a timeline) and all the way to using morse code as a form of communication (A "H" is four dots in morse code).

My final concept was to simplify the entire brand and to make it more fun so as to engage a younger target audience. I never wanted it to cross over into being "funny" as I wanted the older generation to feel safe in coming back to the channel.

Sketchbook Excerpts
Below are a few pages taken from my sketchbook, demonstrating some of the other initial concepts I generated.
