Renovation, San Anselmo CA

SCOPE
Full gut rehab including 75% interior demolition, rebuilding garage, new terrace and landscaping.
Project management included resolving the permit quagmire left behind by the former owner, who had rebuilt the roof lines.
Norm and Jacque had been living in San Francisco, renting a flat from former clients of mine. Avid travelers, wine collectors, foodies, hikers, athletes, dog owners, they wanted the Marin life and found their spot in the center of San Anselmo – walking distance from the town's restaurants and shops, as well as the trails of Mt. Tamalpais.
They had made successes of their careers in marketing. When I arrived at the house to survey the existing conditions, it was easy to see why. They had created story boards with images of interiors, features, fixtures and materials they liked.
We had to respond to their design priorities in a way that fit the existing shell but completely replaced the old rabbit-warren layout within.
We moved the stairway from the front of the house to the center, bringing light and central organization to the spaces and circulation.
The front hall receives the familiy's boots, packs, dog leashes, etc., in a space integrated with living, but with clutter tucked out of sight.
A large eat-in kitchen faces expansive indoor-outdoor terrace area for family-style entertaining. There is a wine bar in the middle of this action.
