Untitled Family

Objective: As an introduction to the letterpress, create artwork that uses type and relief pressure printing. In order to print the two-color book, I completed a typeface mock-up in Adobe InDesign, printed the design onto transparency film and then used that as a guide to block the letters for the press. The overlay print design for the reverse side was completed in Adobe Illustrator and the cityscape was manipulated in Adobe Photoshop to achieve the desired effect. The resulting book was multi-layered in form and concept. A final version of the book was purchased for an artist book collection.

Artist Statement:

An investigation of both the family and book structure.  As culture shifts and changes to include the new parameters of its society, we must understand the dynamics of the shift and, for the viewer to reveal to him or herself where there own beliefs sit within the structure, either past or present. This book questions the definition of both a contemporary book and family structure. The folded piece is defined as a book but does not contain a title on the separate cover. The pages of content unfold into a flat sheet to reveal a cityscape as foundation for the content on the primary layers.
