Displays and public art projets
Apple store window display
My client Brian Hirahara of BH Development has a passion for building koi ponds, there is even a secret pond behind the Corners Development. I asked Kahni Horton, local artist if we could use her old Koi artwork from the 1500 project for our display at the former Apple store on Main Street. She and I discussed the logistics and scale, and Kahni graciously decided to create new koi artwork to fit our dimensions!
1500 Mt Diablo Blvd, construction banners
This project was an interesting challenge. I had just read about Art Bridge in NYC, a concept where artists paint their interpretations of life in the neighborhoods in which the construction banners are hung. It is hugely successful and makes it a little easier for locals and business owners to suffer through major construction projects. With the theme "Living in the Creek" over 300 submittals were provided by local artists, out of that 40 were selected by our committee; Walnut Creek Art Education Association, The Bedford Gallery and Brian Hirahara of BH Development owner of the property and the person who funded the project. After selection, we had all selected artists bring their work to be scanned, and I lay out the pieces to work within our site. After completion we had a budget and non selected pieces left over, and decided to hang another construction fence on Locust Street, Walnut Creek.
Display on Locust Street, Client: BH Development
An idea I had, but was unable to do involved repurposing the printed banners into reusable tote bags to sell at The Bedford Gallery upon dismantling of the displays. I had sourced a vendor in NYC that employs homeless workers to take the banners from the museums there when they are removed, and sew the material into large tote bags. We provided the artists with the high resolution files of their work. Our crew of volunteers helped hang the second installment. (I'm in the dark sweater)
Utility Box Wrap 1500 Mt Diablo Blvd
Utility box artwork. We repurposed the file from the 1500 Display I made sure the image wrapped around continuously. I find it ironic the utility box stands in front of the building where we had our banner display exhibited.
Glass Door Decal, 1500 Mt Diablo Blvd. Walnut Creek, CA
This BH Development door faces busy Main Street in Walnut Creek. The client wanted to block the street side view into the building while allowing people from the inside full view of the street. I went with a 20-80 gauge decal printed and installed by Studio Blue. It looks pretty realistic, and makes people look twice as they walk past.
