Elegant and noble in soul

MANDARIN ORIENTAL PUDONG, SHANGHAI is located on the banks of the Huangpu River flowing through Lujiazui Financial District of the Pudong in Shanghai City, an area that has changed dramatically in the face of remarkable economic growth.
The Yangtze River has a rich history fusing people, works and culture dating back to antiquity. The Huangpu River flows into the Yangtze River just east of Shanghai City before emptying into the East China Sea. The Song Dynasty, which is considered to have created the most sophisticated culture in China’s long history, flourished in the Jiangnan area alongside the permanent source of water that the Yangtze River provided. It is here that “elegant and noble in soul” first appeared, showcasing a harmony with nature. The same soul is still present today, although in a slightly different form from that which has evolved with the times.
Shanghai is now shifting from a period of rapid growth, to a period of splendid maturity. Through this Art Collection, we hope that visitors will experience the “elegant and noble in soul” concept, signs of modern aesthetics, cosmopolitan traditions, and Chinese culture that is as rich as the great streams.
