50 Shades of Grey Book Cover

For this assignment, we were required to redesign a book cover. We were not allowed to design our own book, so I selected 50 Shadess of Grey, as I always thought the original book cover was very weak given the supposed subject matter. I wanted my book cover to be suggestive of the eroticism between the covers of the book. There needed to be a reference to the male element and an elemt to the book cover that represented the feminine. There needed to be passsion and excitement on this cover to draw interest to the book. As the original cover below looks, I have more of a feel leaning towards the "business" education section. I needed sex to sell this project...and I'm good at sex...
The original book cover to 50 Shades of Grey
In order to develop te feminine aspect of this book cover, my lovely wife assisted me by posing for an erotic photo shoot. With her permission, I used an image from the set and created this pained effect in Enlight on my iPad. I recolored the image to hot pinks and shades of red to set fir to the image. She is shrouded in darkness to represent the darkness of the subject matter and Christian Grey's character. She is in the throws of passion, yet bathed in a sea of wicked intent. I feel that this image properly reflects the sbject matter of the book more appropriately than a grey tie.
For the rest of the cover, I selected Adelle PE (bold and regular) for the copy, as it is a masculine font that has a high degree of readibility and is clean and neat like Mr. Grey. The color for the back cover and spine is an 80% grey derrived from a rich black (60,40,40,100) so that there would be a more refined color richness. I went with a deeply tinted red for the highlight copy to break down the sections relative to their importance. The grid for the back of the book is a simple three column, with a large center and wide margins. I pulled my own publisher and barcode elements from google, and credit to whomever graciously poste these without any restrictions for school projects. So, this is my 50 Shades of Grey reimagined.
