A Retro Illustration for The Writer's Chronicle

The February issue of The Writer's Chronicle is out including my cover illustration for the Jennifer Egan article and this inside illustration which was inspired by the poem by Frank O'Hara entitled Why I am not a Painter included in the essay Press Send about the transparent poem. There were so many different directions I could have gone in to illustrate this article but I chose to focus on the poem by Frank O'Hara which seemed to be the perfect example of the article's theme. It amused me and created such a vivid picture in my mind of transparent sardines and oranges. I thought the retro feeling of the tablecloth and the plate would be appropriate given that the poem was written in 1957 . It is always an exciting challenge to illustrate for this magazine!
