The St. Lawrence-Lewis County BOCES STEM program is focused on assisting teachers in STEM (Science, Technology, Enginerring, and Math) fields in K-12 schools. These fields are distinct but also share a lot of the same problem solving and exploration techniques.
In branding the STEM program, I wanted to show each of these areas of study and what makes them unique, but also show them all together. I started with the 2x2 grid design, which led naturally to the interlocked puzzle pieces. The style of the individual pieces and the logo as a whole was done because the program covers such a wide age range - it needed to appeal to kindergarden students to high school seniors, and all the way up to seasoned teachers, through simple shapes and bright colors.
The BOCES STEM Program needed a website to put up lesson plans and other resources for K-12 teachers in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties. I worked on the project with two computer science graduate students. The STEM Program's grant provided one year of support for the website to be completed, but after that grant BOCES staff needed to be able to update the website as needed. For this reason the team decided to use a WordPress installation, which I was not familiar with but the other students highly suggested.
The work was split up so that the other team members worked with the server and setup of the installation, and I worked on the look and feel of the website as well as the graphics. Once the website was set up we presented the STEM program with several layouts, and worked off of the one they chose. I was mostly involved in directly editing the CSS sheets and HTML on specific pages. I also created a newer logo indentity for use on the website. My other main job was adding the initial content, including approximately 120 lesson plans and several link and event pages.
