A New Kind ofĀ PiƱata

"The traditionalĀ piƱataĀ has seven points symbolizing the seven deadly sins. The blindfolded participant represents the conquerorĀ of evil, or faith. TheyĀ areĀ suppose to destroy the sins by hitting and breaking theĀ piƱataĀ into pieces. The candies andĀ treats that come pouring out from the brokenĀ piƱataĀ symbolize the forgiveness of sins and a new beginning."

Intrigued in the act of breaking theĀ piƱata, I designed aĀ symbolic experienceĀ about breaking stereotypes and socialĀ boundaries.Ā The exterior takesĀ the form ofĀ a typicalĀ "it's a girl!" baby shower signĀ that is heavy on pink, very "girly". The interior doesn't just holdĀ candies but attached to each piece areĀ cardsĀ with alphabet blocksĀ imagery and a different occupation nameĀ underneath each letter. The rest of the insideĀ is filled with rainbow confetti to contrast with the pink facade, emphasizing the idea that she doesn't just have to be pink, she can beĀ anything she wants, she can like any color she wants.Ā
