Chicago Museum Explores History of Bikes

Maarten de Jeu, a graduate of Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, serves as founder of SVM Business Advisory. In addition to leading the Chicago-based investment firm, Maarten de Jeu served as co-chair of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry’s "Science Spins" program.

A family-friendly biking event held in 2012, Science Spins included the participant’s choice of either a 6.5-mile or a 30-mile cycling trek that terminated at the museum. Once participants arrived at the museum, they could view a display of historic bikes that now form part of the permanent collection.

The bikes in the exhibit included a replica of an 1818 Draisienne. This bike, engineered in Germany, was the first two-wheel, human-propelled bike. Also included was a replica of an 1820 McMillan, a Scottish invention that added pedals to the bike frame, and a 1900 No. 10 Giant, which debuted the diamond-shaped frame we are familiar with today.

In addition to the bikes, the exhibit included other opportunities to learn about technology, engineering, and energy, including a tour of an eco-friendly home built on the museum grounds.
