Concept for ALMA Leather
The "Transformer Basket" concept product was designed for ALMA, the UK's leading leather specialist. While already well known for their innovative applications of leather in interior spaces, ALMA was in need of a new product that would fit the existing brand while becoming a profitable new offering.
My self-brief was to design a product that was based on traditional craft but modified in design to add more value. The result was a decorative yet functional basket that could easily be transformed from a flower vase into a fruit bowl. To give the vessel flexibility and structure, its body was made from strips of leather woven together using a traditional basket-weaving technique known as open-weave bias plaiting. The basket's base was made from ceramic and crowned with a wide, leather collar at the opening.
