19 Miles Around is a chronological documentation of one of the darkest days in the history of nuclear energy, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. The name of the book alludes to the actual area of land that has been abandoned and is now uninhibited due to the high levels of radiation. The concept for the book was to document the sequence of events in a neutral and somber tone. The usage of cement color stock juxtaposed by the bright neon stock creates a powerful visual contrast. The book was then bound with aluminum screws to support the industrial look. And a paper label inspired by those found on toxic cans was then placed on the cover.
