Book of Nonsense
A contemporary approach to Edward Lear's book of Nonsense
The task of this brief was to select a certain amount of Edward Lear’s nonsense work and produce a sample book using both type and image. The target audience was left to be defined by us, so I’ve decided to aim at children, between the ages of 7 to 12, who are still learning how to read and write.

The book of Nonsense is a collection of diverse Nonsense poems, our parents and grand-parents grew up with.  I strongly believe that each book has its own personality, and for this one I couldn’t help but changing the usual portrait format to landscape. Each verse was designed as an individual image, but still had to work with the others as a whole composition, so that when children open the book, they get this continues long image.

Starting from hand drawn characters, I ended up combining drawings with digital painting and photography. The traditional drawings keep the overall result from loosing that familiar dark feeling of Edward Lear’s original books, and provide the young readers with an interesting experience of a magical world of nonsense words and
quirky characters.
