Book of Nonsense - Edward Lear

Book of Nonsense
The History of the Seven Families of Lake Pipple-Popple (A Socia list Adaptation)
This project required me to take one of the many stories by Edward Lear and illustrate it. I took the opportunity to use the story as a platform to express some of my own views on society. The initial design process cause much confusion among my peers but I think that now the book as come together in it's final form the message is much clearer. The book was handmade, printed, embossed and assembled by myself.
The book flat and open, with the inside contents page unfolded
Flashing the book some more
The inside back cover (a maze shown opened) on this mock up the maze was attached by the wrong edge. And in any actual 'production' would fold out and not inwards.
Presentation Board 1 : Shows some of the basic graphic elements. The 3 geometric shapes, the circle referencing safety and warmth, the square a journey and expanse and finally the triangle signalling warning. Also present is an example of animal stencil that feature heavily.
Presentation Board 2: Contents (inside cover) When opened out this shows the journey of the characters and poses questions to the reader. It also holds a reminder of the advice given by the parents of the children before sending them on their way in the world.
Presentation Board 3: The Maze (inside back cover) After reading the content the reader must see if they can navigate their way back to Lake Pipple Popple (the Utopia preached within the sub notes of the book) by either answering questions or understanding how the maze has to work to function.
Presentation Board 4: Photos of the book and an example of a chapter.
Presentation Board 5: Sketchbook work. Perhaps there was too much in the way of written work in the sketchbook. I was having to deal with a lot of issues and themes and needed to summarize them as best as possible before moving onto a way of getting them to a page graphically.
