additive subtractive

2014

Knowledge about materials and processes enables designers to challenge the mechanics and manufacturing with intelligent and innovative solutions that may otherwise have gone unexplored - Thompson, 2011.

Additive subtractive explores the relationship between additive manufacturing (3D printing) and subtractive manufacturing and the underlying design potential that may exist when marrying the two processes. Each experiment analyses computer driven processes and the effects these processes have on specific materials. The experiments are designed to create new opportunities for innovative jointing, textures and aesthetics to for the design and fabrication of new objects and furniture. The particular experiments below focus on structural integrity, aesthetic relevance and material characteristics.
