This oven was used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to work the sugar plantations on the island of Maui. This particular oven was moved from the plantation camp in the town of Paia to the Sugar Museum located next to the factory.
The Sugar Museum’s focus is on preserving the historic and cultural heritage of Maui’s sugar industry, which has lasted for 125 years.
This 3D model is a test case to show the benefits of digital archiving and of using the technology for interactive educational tools.
Small museums need support from tourism to stay alive, and hopefully 3D models of their exhibits and artifacts as seen on social media and websites will drive interest to go visit these wonderful museums.
