Unit 1: Intro to Digital Asset Creation

What is a Digital Asset?
Any item of text or media that has been formatted into a binary source that includes the right to use it.
- things that are made to be applied to other works. These are digitally made and MUST have the rights to use.

textual, images, multimedia - three categories
textual - words - ex. cooking website - the recipe
multimedia - sound, audio (ADR and dialogue), Foley Art
Images - Visuals, logo

Careers
- web design
- sound design [libraries that studios can use to get sound from (those are digital assets)]
- App Development
- Film Production (Green Screen Assets)
- Game Development

Learn:
- Textual - downloadable word docs, 3D turntable sheets,
- Assets must meet product requirements
- Design sounds for animations, films and games
- File Formats
- Provide Assets where people can see (Vimeo - Stock Footage is an asset)

Activity 1: Art Asset List
The piece of digital media that I chose to analyze was an online game called . . .
Cookie Clicker

The Website/Game
Website/Game
Textual:
Text: The text they used for the site was all very similar to one another and provided an overall "cartoony" feeling to the entirety of the site. The style of the text allowed for a very neat but playful environment.

Game History: This consists of the general content of the game as it gives the "About" or history of where the game came from, who made it, and why. This part would have been created by those who were in charge of the games overall content.

Game Instructions/Options: Similar to the above example, this also provides to the overall gameplay and content of the game as it was made to guide those who don't know how to play the game. The options also provide a variety of different paths the player can take; choices that were made individually to improve the gameplay.

Company Info/Sharing Website Bar: This piece of the website, located near the top of the page under the URL, was made to serve as a "sharing centre" of sorts. It was made to expand the games range by developing a reputation for itself and to help others share the site with the world.

Statistics: This information directly correlates with the gameplay and changes depending on what you do in the game. The concepts of these "stats" were made to improve the gameplaying experience and to add to the games content.

Image:
Logos: This includes the pictures that are used to show what the "items" look like in shop.

Art: When I say "art", I'm speaking about the whole GUI interface you see on the site. This includes the theme of the background, text, and images. All have focus and move towards a similar "cartoony" but professional feel that connects you to the big picture which is you getting cookies for your company. The blue and brown colours help to portray this "cookie shop" feeling.

Favicon: This is located at the very top, away from the website's GUI. Located on the tab of your web browser, it was made to portray the website in one single symbol or image; in this case, its a cookie.

2D Animation: These 2D animations can mostly be found on the left side of the screen. These consist of the animated cookie, cursor and hearts that appear from time to time.

Background of site: The GUI or the overall design of the background. The colours of blue and brown and also the striped design. This was made separately to serve the needs of a cookie themed background. We can even see in the bottom that there's milk flowing for the cookie.

Pop up Bars (Hovering): These Pop Up Bars have a different design than the normal images you see on the website. When open, the bars or "boards" contribute to the feel of the website due to its similar color to the background.

Multi-media:
Game Updates: Found also on the "Info" page, the game regularly updates itself and the rest of the players of these changes. These changes is made by computer/game programmers and applied to the game regularly.

Buttons: The buttons that players click to either purchase items, move to another page, or simply click on the cookie all need to be programmed to work.

Sound: The sound you hear from the game come from pressing the cookie, purchasing items, or even changing pages. These individual sounds were created to enhance the gaming experience.

Program the Game Mechanics: Alot of the games mechanics such as being able to click the cookie, change pages, purchase items and them APPLYING to the actual game is all up to the programmers job. Without this, the game wouldn't be considered a game as it wouldn't work at all!

Achievement Notices and Application of Item Purchases: These, similar to the above, are side mechanics that also had to be accounted for, such as the application of the items to the game after purchasing them, the changing stats, number of cookies you get by clicking, and even the achievements that pop up when you click

Highlights: These occur when one moves your cursor overtop of any button. The button or numbers that you may hover over light up, creating a feeling of change and making the player feel more involved as it's more "interactive".

Sprites: These consist of the cursors that move around the cookie and click for you to the little hearts that appear from time to time in the game. These all have to be designed to move and appear throughout the players gameplay.

Thematic Review
The theme of Cookie Clicker which is to provide an enjoyable and long lasting gaming experience for its players (ranging from youths to older youths) is clearly demonstrated through all three categories of assets: textual, images, and multi-media. All the different components of textual assets helps to enhance the gaming experience as it gives he player more freedom to do what they want and provides backstory/the main content for the games purpose. The options, statistics, and info of items/the game provided through the texts gives the player a wider range to play around with, allowing for an enjoyable experience. This similar experience is provided through the images of the game. All of the logos, art such as the background and the concept designs for the animations are all very cartoony and fit the style of the game. The blue and brown colors plus the shading makes the website stand out and creates a very "homey" environment that feels like you're actually baking the cookies. The overall tone of the website through its art does not only relate to the content of the texts, but adds to the visual storytelling that the website would have otherwise lacked. However, the texts and images still require the most important part to a game: the actual game programming itself! The multi-media assets fill in the in this gap as it includes the different programming mechanics to make the game function. Many of these assets were made to create a very simple yet fun gaming experience. With a very easy interface to navigate through, and very easy mechanics to the game, it allows for players of any kind of level to play the game, increasing the range of possible players. The gaming mechanics combined with texts and images leaves a long lasting impression on the player as it becomes very addicting to play a "simple" game.

Raster
gif/jpg
pixel based
good for photo editing
limited scalability
low pixel count = grainy
bigger file size
lossless compression: perfect copy of the image
lossy compression: looks like perfect but loses some quality for smaller size
JPG - most used - lossy - 24bit - not transparent - flattens image
TIFF- lossless file format - highest quality but big size -supports layers
GIF - supports animatioin - supports transparency
PNG - transparent

RAW - full replication of sensor data, very high file size
PSD - photoshop - can't be read w/out adobe
PDF - photoshop - used to share photoshop images

Vector
ai/eps/pdf
path based
good for logo design
can scale up and not lose quality
infinietely scalable

AI - illustrator - can't read w/out adobe
EPS - used to share
