PIXEL
In the second half of XX century typography had gone through two big revolutions — firstly, in the '80s, computers started to be used as a tool for creating bitmap lettering — each glyph was stored as a grid filled with countable pixels. That was neither pretty, nor convenient, but it accounted for a transition from wood and metal type to the digital world.
In the '90s personal computers made desktop publishing available on a massive scale, therefore there was an increasing need for creating more digital typefaces. Digital fonts eventually became scalable vector graphics — or algorithmic descriptions of lines and curves.
