Sirens of the Sea

Three concept illustrations for a chapter in a folklore book and a double-page chapter opener.

Sirenas are half human, half fish. They are the guardians of the sea. They are known to bring bad omens such as storms and shipwrecks. They lure fishermen and sailors through their enchanting looks and beautiful voice, and offer them to the sea deities.
For my first illustration I sketched and inked, then digitally painted in Photoshop. I wanted to re-create a classic story book style of illustration.
In the second illustration above, I decided to take a more modern approach wtih smooth, clean lines and hard shadows. I again drew this by hand and then inked and coloured them in Illustrator. I hope that the illustration narrates the story I am trying to tell.
This is my third and my chosen final piece. I was inspired by the traditional Filipino paintings that often have a modernist/cubist influence. Created using Adobe Illustrator.
