Typographic Systems

I designed and wrote this book based on the book Typographic Systems by Kimberly Elam. This was a 15 week project, during which time I participated in weekly critiques. I took the critiques as an opportunity to learn from my own mistakes and the mistakes and successes of others.
In addition to learning techniques for properly utilizing type, I was able to practice writing and laying out an entire book. I created a grid, which I used to maintain a consistent flow and appearance of copy, imagery, and design elements throughout my book. I also learned to walk the line between creating a consistent look and making each section unique to its respective subject matter.
For each section, I created a title page to set the tone for what that chapter was about. I did this by choosing a color to be used throughout the chapter and by designing a graphic to illustrate the system. The point of these illustrations was to get the reader thinking about the system before they even read about it.
Below is an example of a page spread from my book. Before laying out all of the information, I designed a few templates that would support all of the information that I needed to include on each page. These templates allowed for a certain amount of customization in order to be flexible. However, they all have a similar look and feel so the reader can anticipate exactly where to look to find important information.
This book was originally created to be interactive. Although Behance doesn't support it, the black circle on the left side of the color bar is actually a button that brings the reader to the table of contents. It briefly pulses in order to communicate to the reader that it is an interactive element. The bottom left and right corners of the pages contain "page curls" that navigate the reader to the previous and following pages respectively.
Each page contains a brief outline of what the system is, as well as an explanation of the compositions that I designed within that system.
I used my own photographs for the first Applied System page. The challenge here was to find photos that could accommodate the various typographic systems.
The final piece of this project was to create concert posters for Red Rocks Amphitheatre using photos of the venue. Again, I took the time to find photos that would work well with the typographic systems.
