Concept Design for Disaster Relief housing from when I was doing my Master's Degree.
Was initial concept but was transformed into a separate personal project.
More details to come.
After the terrible natural disasters occuring in the Philippines, I thought of how the affected would be able to rebuild their homes that were ravaged by Typhoon Yolanda. As a child living in Manila, typhoons were such a common event and I was reminded of opening the front door of the house to monstrously strong winds beating the many houses outside. I clearly remember seeing corrugated roofs flying across the sky which prompted me to think, would integrating walls and roof help in constructing in the Philippines?
Notes:
Explored uses of construction materials and finishes that are native to the country such as : coconut timber
Researched history of Filipino vernacular architecture prior to Spanish and American colonisation
Researched demographics of Filipino families ( children in family etc)
Other options:
Use in other countries where disaster relief is needed
One of the many concept design for Master's Project on Low cost sustainable housing (2014-2015) Exploring uses of coconut shells and coconut lumber. Coco shells are one of the most discarded wastes in the Philippines with coconut trees being native to the country.
Concept: Combination of traditional Filipino architecture with modernist features. Indigineous Filipino architecture had a prominent roof that was iconic.
Exploring other possibilities of housing by developing the sketch further into ArchiCAD instead of scrapping the idea.
Concept: Combines the roof with the walls - ( Indigenous Filipino architecture of the roof being a prominent feature )
