The iOS App Redesign project touched on variety of features for the ApartmentGuide and Rent.com apps. The assignment began by conducting user testing and research on the current iOS app and then addressing the issues found in research, through the redesign. I worked closely with the project manager to define the scope of the project, write specifications, create final assets and work with the engineers to get the project built. User Testing Old App
Before the redesign could begin, I wrote a test script and conducted user testing on the old iOS app. I wanted to know the primary issues users were having with the experience so that the redesign could solve these problems.
User Testing Report and Highlight Reel
I studied 5 participants and created a highlight reel that showed the primary problems users had while using the app. I also wrote a brief report on the RentPath User Research wiki I created and presented the findings to my product team. I discovered a variety of issues with the search process and filtering, along with other various usability hurdles.
After meeting with my Product Manager and presenting my research, we decided on which features we wanted to address and began creating wireframes.
Wireframe: Product Details Screen
On the product details screen, I moved the price up on the screen, knowing this information was vital to users. I created a new heart icon for saving properties and added a video and tour feature to improve engagement on the screen.
Icon Design and Exploration
I created new icons for playing videos and viewing digital tours. I designed a variety of other original icons and then exported the final assets for the developers.
In my user testing I found that the old map did not start the user off at their current location, causing confusing. I changed the experience to start the user at their current location and made revisions to the information architecture based on user feedback. Price was the most important criteria which is why it's at the top of the listing, followed by the property name and how many beds were available. Other information like baths or pets could have been added but I didn't want to clutter the UI and only display the essential information that users found the most valuable.
I redesigned the filters screen following the feedback I received in my user test, putting price at the top, followed by bedrooms and pets. I took great care referring to Apple's iOS Human Interface Guidelines assuring that I was using device standard experiences, as much as possible.
Mockup: Property Details Screen
On the product details screen, I redesigned the screen with the intention to build engagement and add features that users wanted. I moved the price up on the screen, knowing this information was vital to users. I created a new heart icon for saving properties and added a video, tour and ratings features to improve engagement and add value to the user.
Mockup: Video Screen
The video player allowed users to see a video of the property they were thinking about renting.
The virtual tour allowed users to move around different rooms in the apartment by clicking on the screen to a new room or using a drop down menu to select the room they wanted.
Mockup: Ratings and Reviews Overview
I also added a ratings and reviews feature to the property details screen where users could read reviews from certified residents at the apartment. The overview provided a ratings breakdown of how many stars, different aspects of the property received. Users could learn more by clicking into the written reviews.
The reviews screen provided users with written reviews from actual residents. Users could sort reviews, rate the helpfulness or report abuse on any of the reviews.
Mockup: Create an Account
In user testing I learned that users wanted to be able to use Facebook to create an account, which I added to the sign up screen.
After I created the new designs for the app I put together an interactive prototype with InVision to get more user testing feedback. I made some minor revisions to the designs based on the feedback and prepared the final designs for the developers. View the InVision prototype.
Create Final Screens for App Store
After the redesign project was done and assets and written specs were delivered to the developers, I updated all the screenshots in the App Store to highlight the new features.
