George Wood is a paperback adventure novelist who is bored with his everyday life. Reality is no match to the imaginary world he creates in his storybooks. His characters are smooth and audacious, and face danger on a daily basis. George has a fine job, a fine apartment, and a fine wife. But where is the adventure?
George's secret escapades find him in a string of affairs with exotic women, one of whom he becomes attached to. She is mysterious, beautiful, and introspective, and known to George only as "She".
Everything seems enchanting at first as George becomes increasingly entranced by her. He finds himself uprooting his life to keep his forbidden flame alive. But as their secret relationship progresses, it becomes more apparent that She isn't interested in what George has in mind.
