A Friday with Coreanos

A Friday with Coreanos
Two weekends with an Austin favorite.

The Austin food scene is notorious– in a town filled with professionals, foodies, and college students, this town known for great live music should also be known for great local food. Here, the food truck is a staple. These photographs are the result of two Fridays shadowing Coreanos, the trailer started by LA transplants wanting to serve “Mexican Cuisine with Korean in Between”.

Service starts at around 6 pm with in the Austin neighborhood of West Campus, near The University of Texas. It shifts at 9 pm to a corner no more than a block away from the infamous 6th Street, where the trailer gets dozens upon dozens of customers looking for something quick and delicious, and Coreanos' Korean BBQ tacos, burritos, and french fries are the perfect solution.

Coreanos is an underdog.  It's a hidden gem. Their main rivals in the Austin Korean BBQ taco game, Chi’lantro, has been cooking in the same style as Coreanos for longer, has more trailers and locations, and is established as one of Austin's favorite trucks.

“Yeah, I’ve tried Chi’lantro,” Kevin Cho, one of the former owners, said, “But when I did, I knew we could make this food better.”

What I didn't know as I was taking these photos, acquainting myself with the unseen side of street food, was that the owners I had met were in the process of selling the business. Kevin and Gene Cho (a name shared by coincidence, not genetics), the LA transplants that so graciously let my camera and I catch candid glimpses of their business, invited me to come back at any time to catch up and grab a bite.

No more than a month later I came back to their usual spot in West Campus, and a new person was taking my order. The food is just as delicious and the new owners are just as friendly, but it adds a new poignancy to this endeavor.

I captured the waning days of the old guard.

Here's to them.
