JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes

Clifford “Cliff” Kigar is a mechanical engineering student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, where he also belongs to the men’s lacrosse team. Cliff Kigar contributes to charitable causes such as JDRF One Walk, a fundraising event designed to support Type 1 diabetes research.

Thanks to events such as One Walk, JDRF provides millions of dollars in research funding every year. In recent years, JDRF was a major contributor to the first test of a closed-loop artificial pancreas system. Because the pancreas is one of the organs most affected by Type 1 diabetes, an artificial pancreas system may allow individuals with the disease to live relatively normal lives until a cure is found.

Other work supported by JDRF includes research into beta cell bodyguards, which have the potential to restore normal insulin function for 18 to 24 months. JDRF also has provided $5 million in funding for glucose control mechanisms such as “smart insulin,” which circulates in the body and activates only when it is needed.
