Captives: Orcas and Pandas

Illustration
"Captives: Orcas 'n Pandas" is the third in our "Animal Odd Couples" series of prints.  Like the previous images, we are pairing a marine and terrestrial animal, one of which is endangered.  For the third image the series we paired the animals based mostly on their similar color pattern initially though as we researched the animals other connections in relation to their relationship to humans emerged as well (whic is the theme of this series of images).

We created an edition of 150 signed and numbered Fine-art Giclée prints on Somerset watercolor paper.  30" x 24" plus 3-inch border.

The process begins making detailed renderings of the animals in pencil. The compenents of the background pattern are then painted with acrylic paint.  All the elements are then scanned in and brought into Adobe Photoshop so that color nd addittional shading can be added to the animals and they are arranged in the comoposition.  The background pattern components are then duplicated and arranged behind the animals.

It was fun to give some of the pairs of animals a bit of character. These two are pretty spastic and having a good time!
