SolAbode
Team Alberta Solar Decathlon 2009
SolAbode is a protoytpe for modular solar powered housing, designed by an interdisciplinary student team from the Calgary's leading post-secondary institutions. The home was entered into the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon 2009, a biennial competition which challenges international student teams to design, build and operate the most efficient, affordable and attractive solar homes. Besting numerous returning competitors to place 6th out of 20, SolAbode also received the Alberta Emerald Award in the youth category, and a Calgary Award for environmental excellence.

Key features:
-Grid tied solar power - annual net zero energy demand
-spacious 1 bedroom interior
-roof top patio
-repurposed materials, rural Alberta aesthetic

As a volunteer on this project, I assisted with construction, transportation and showcasing of the home at the competition in Washington, D.C. This was a great foundation for my work on the 2011 project, which addresses critical housing needs in First Nations and other Aboriginal communities (see TRTL).
