Visualizing Meaning

Visualizing Meaning
I created two short motion studies visually exploring the meaning of a word for a graduate motion design class. Two words were selected from a pre-defined list, and the objective was to clearly interpret the meaning of the words through motion under 10 seconds.

In my approach for visualizing the words in motion, I created a listing of associated words (e.g. pull, draw, attracted, unravel, etc.) and conducted a visual survey of images through online, social media and printed channels. After reflecting on my initial research, I thought about the aspects of depth and space that motion provides the viewer and began sketching out ideas.

Motion Study One: Magnetic
The produced version of this study uses the letters that make up the word magnetic to form the actual word. The letters pull through space and depth and line up along the edges of each of the letters in the word. The sketches that follow this short video depicts the thought behind the possible approaches.

Motion Study Two: Unfold
The produced version of this study uses the letters of the word unfold to create the word allowing the viewer to experience the meaning of this word without any ambiguity. The segments of each letter unravels like a flower blooming. The sketches that follow this short video depicts the thought behind the possible approaches.
