This project is a speculative proposal for an urban-scale installation in New York City-- that challenges the question of monumentality and the development of a canonical, iconic image of the city through popular films and social media.

The project stems from our interest in a recent study done at the Department of Computer Science Cornell University, where over 35 million images from flickr.com were gathered, processed, and geo-mapped. Not surprisingly, it was concluded that New York was the most photographed city on Earth. The idea also emerged while taking a  course in Film Studies at Cornell, where the celluloid image of New York was one of the major subjects of discussion.

The objective of this project was to challenge the city's condition of monumentality and iconicity. For this purpose, viewing "boxes" (or small-scale projection booths) are placed in the 7 most photographed places in the city, framing the static shot that proliferates in the internet through social networks. A series of films are projected and overlaid on top of the real image of the site, challenging the question of iconicity as it has been established throughout the internet.

The same viewing boxes are then dismantled and taken to New York's fringes-- the "un-iconic" areas of the city-- places which lack the static, monumental quality of Manhattan, but which have acquired a kind of kinetic, ephemeral iconicity. Once again, the boxes are strategically placed in locations where specific films have been shot, in such a way that the view of the actual site becomes overlaid with the kinetic, ephemeral quality of these films.

Finally, these boxes-- once collectors of visual images-- now become collected items in a concluding exhibit in New York. Spectators will be encouraged to step into the projection booths and watch a stream of images and videos of the boxes' trajectories through the city-- from the iconic centers to the unwanted appendages of the city.
