Lark Press Poetry

The first semester venture was around a publishing organization situated in Cambridge Uk called 'Lark Press'. Our brief was to redesign some famous poetry book covers for Lark Press' 10 year anniversary.

I had chosen these four poets because there is a reoccurring theme that is expressed in their poetry and that is simply that none of these poets can control what is happening to them and what is inevitably going to happen. As discovered in the research how the name of the author is a larger type than the book cover the royalty of the poet has been expressed using the playing card symbols of the back of the books. But After various development this idea was ruled out. I have made multiple exposed images to show the layers to the stories of the poet also to give my series a mysterious look; this is because it makes the viewer look at the book cover for sightly longer as they will be trying to figure out the story and coming up with there own interpretation. As they are a series I will be keeping similarities in the design such as having the name of the poet and the name of the poetry book in the same place and type and size of font. They are not just a series of design but also of content.
E.E Cummings became very depressed when he went through his divorce. E.E Cummings uses a lot of Pathetic Fallacy to represent his depression. He speaks about ships lost at sea, Planes traveling and the colours in the sky changing. The broken umbrellas in my design show how the rain is a weight on him showing the pain he holds that his wife has left him. He didn’t want her to leave and is trying to grasp for her back but its something that he cannot change; he cant control weather.
Based on one of her most famous poems called “Three Women”. The poem is about three different women and their experience with pregnancy. The first women who is the wife; has a healthy pregnancy and is very happy to be having a child. She appears very light on her face smiling. The second women who is described as a sectary and Is struggling very much to conceive; this is not something she can control. This is why she is represented as the middle women who has a clean and normal expression on her face. The final women represents young woman /student who had fallen accidentally pregnant. It is not clear weather she had been raped or not which is why she appears very dark in the photography book cover.
Always strong relation to flowers and wildlife elements in her poems. Although this is not the actual case as these nature elements actually represent People in her life and further more people that are no longer in her life. The quote “I miss you so much when you leave; I know I need you like the air I breathe’’ is the quote that has made the final concept of my book design. I have faintly double exposed pictures of tearing and ripping apart flowers. The blooms die and have irreversible changes showing that her life is always changing and that things will always bee happening that you just wouldn’t expect to happen or would be able to control.
Combination of various poems that are in the poetry book; such as ‘High windows’, ‘The Explosion’, ‘The Old Fools’ and ‘The Card Players’. Overall in this poetry book the poems are about Returning to youth and looking back at the memories that people have had over their lives. The smoke is from the pipes and explosions from the war. The smoke moves across the young girls face showing how in current adolescence the generations are carefree and reckless. Smoke represents the memories and the experiences that people have had across there lives which have a various amount of feelings and shows the different directions in life that people have gone.
