Stone burger is a project that uses illustration to create a children’s book that explores food choices. Throughout the project my objective was to use repetitive illustrations with clear eye catching detail to tell the story without words, and the story to be as expressive as those with words. The storyline is based on the cave man lifestyle, infused with modern illustration.  It aims to inspire young readers toward organic grown produce and staying away from the nasties of packet processed food, to also demonstrate where food comes from before the era of the supermarket.

 

 In this project the main argument I explored was how to create a body of work that uses illustration effectively to guide children’s food choices. During my research, I found that illustrative wordless books are a universal way of communicating with children. A wordless picture book answered my research based question in a comprehensive and desired manner.  Because I am expressing illustration to create the story, having words didn’t feel necessary as long as I communicated the illustration content effectively. Using wordless picture books allows the story to be told entirely through the illustrations. They let children spend quality time with their parents, and allows more interactive communication. Wordless books are fun and encourage multiple learning outcomes such as literacy skills, including listening skills, vocabulary, and comprehension as well giving endless creativity and imagination.

 

I undertook this subject because I believe healthy food choices are an important part of a child’s life from day one.  With the desire to communicate to children in a fun and interactive style, I’ve created a wordless book that allows children to explore an alternative food choice, how it is produced, and linking healthy, whole food and happiness.  Enabling the young audience to connect the relationship illustrated between the caveman lifestyle and today’s world, I’ve added modern elements such as a kitchen, day-to-day utensils and a shopping list, that children from this generation will understand and familiarize with.
