I follow basketball a whole lot and I once read this blog about one Asean Basketball League team changing it's name from one to another because they were changing ownership. The said ownership came up with this logo below:
Now, I am not going to start criticizing this logo as this blog has already pointed out, but needless to say, it doesn't really give the impression of a professional basketball team. So you're probably wondering, why that berry-like royalty for a logo? Well folks, it's called mangosteen.
Powervit Pilipinas Aguilas, formerly backed by no other than Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, was acquired by MX3, a food supplements company banking on the supposed health benefits of the organic compound called xanthone found in mangosteen rinds.
The Philippines is a basketball-crazy country and it's also where one can find the quirkiest team names. Businessmen own teams to mainly promote their products and more often than not, they name their teams after a product they're trying to promote. Say San Miguel Beermen, Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants, Talk N Text Tropang Texters...You get the message. The current incarnation of this team has quite a safe and very common name - Pilipinas MX3 Kings, but they more than made up for it by blatantly using a cartoonish fruit for their logo. I think it would have been brilliant had they decided to rid of the face and showcase the inside of the fruit instead.
Hopefully, (with this logo) fans, players and staff would find this symbol inspiring and would feel a sense of pride supporting and/or playing for this team.
