Tommy’s Mirrors and Tables

Often things backstage, which are not seen by the audience, are plain and functional.
It’s lovely to have such attractive things to work alongside.”

Tommy’s mirror

My compositions can be defined by two main characteristics.
Firstly, there is a mirror in the middle of each composition. The whole composition changes each time someone else looks in the mirror as a different face becomes the centrepiece. This allows each person to create a unique composition of their own, and the only one of its kind in the world. My works break the divide of the ‘artist’ and the ‘audience’ by creating artwork that is only completed by the participation of the audience into the works.

As Leonardo da Vinci once said, “The painter who draws merely by practice and by eye, without any reason, is like a mirror which copies every thing placed in front of it without being conscious of their existence.” and I have learnt a lot by using a mirror as an objet in my compositions.

Secondly, there are light bulbs installed in my compositions to induce a sense of drama and theatre which will evoke the audience in feeling like the protagonist in my artwork. I wanted to send the message that we are all the protagonist of our own lives and have the right to live a full and happy life.

I hope anyone who sees my works can feel this and live a life with
a happy ending.

이번 작업은 두 가지로 설명될 수 있다.

첫째, 작품 중간에는 거울이 달려있다. 거울을 보는 사람마다 그림이 달라진다. 그러면 작업은 보는
사람만의 작품이 되는 것이다.이 세상의 유일무이한 작품이 되는 것이다. 작가는 그림을 그리고 관객은
그림을 보는 것이 아닌 관객이 작품에 참여하여 작품을 완성시킨다.

또한 ‘거울은 예술가에게 가장 좋은 선생님’이라고 레오나르도 다빈치가 말했듯 거울을 오브제로
활용하면서 많은 것을 배웠다.

마지막으로 작업에 조명을 넣어 마치 연극이나 드라마의 주인공이 된 것 같은 감성을 불어 넣었다.
우리는 각자의 인생에 주인공이고 주인공으로서 행복한 삶을 살 권리가 있다는 것을 전하고 싶었다.
내 작업을 보는 사람들의 인생도 언제나 해피엔딩이 되었으면 좋겠다.
