THESIS: abstract
I am studying the legacy of a person’s online presence to investigate the impacts of what happens once he or she passes away. By exploring the speculative future of our digital self through potential scenarios, I hope to stimulate conversation regarding our “digital legacy.” This thesis further addresses a series of interrelated questions concerning our relationship to the digital realm both in the present and beyond this life.
To explore these potential scenarios, I separated how we deal with memory and death. By adopting psychologist Daniel Kahneman theory of the “Experiencing Self and Remembering Self” to design, and I conducted various amount of experiments that operated within these realms.
SCOPE
This is a series of speculative projects of how memory might be active or reactive in the future. Each experiment was carried out throughout a course of extended time period, mulching together memories from many disparate elements throughout the digital realm and forming them into both tangible and intangible things.
This was an experiment conducted over the past 12 months, from recording one second everyday of my life in 2015, using the application Cesar Kuriyama a Pratt Alumni created called 1secondeveryday.
Using this a platform to gather my life data over the past year and transfusing or “Mulching together” content from various digital mediums such as snapchat, facebook, instagram, etc. along with adding the Geolocation of where each second was recorded.
This materialization of memory in form of a time capsule video, summarize my legacy over this past year. Paired with this tangible Analog Scrubber that is connected to the display unit, that moves across time but never pausing on a second, this created a third dimension of interpretation.
It speculates that this is how we may view our past experiences and legacy.
