Community Clusters - Jamaica Plain MA

This was a project completed during a sophomore year studio, in which we were given a topographically challenging site in an undulating park in Jamaica Pond, Boston, Massachusetts. We were told to create a community center based on program revolving around a "clubhouse" or a central indoor gathering space, along with meeting rooms, classrooms, locker rooms, a cafe and outdoor space.
I used the naturally dramatic landscape to create an outdoor ampitheater to encourage a performing program, and created gathering spaces that lead users towards the beautiful lake. The terracing between the three crystalline structures, which jut out of the hillside and lead sunlight down through the buildings, creates smaller outdoor gathering spaces to lend individuality to a large center. Paths lead along hilltops to various sports fields throughout the park, and connect to other scenic pathways.
The initial sketch- crystalline structures jut out of the steep hillside, clustered around an outdoor ampitheater and edging a path the lake.
