Public Paper # Vallila

Paper is all around us. Legal documents, advertising, packaging, leaflets, currency – paper is exchanged on a daily routine without us even paying much notice to it. Paper is propaganda, it is learning, it is a necessity as much as it is plaguing us with its abundance.

Public Paper is an art project in Vallila, where the materiality, accessibility and affordability of paper are departure points. It is set in public space, where much of the paper we use is already in circuit.  Paper is used in any form, as long as it is used or presented in a public context. It is allowed to weather, wither and to disappear, if that is the result of paper’s confrontation with public use. And it is used as a way to interact with the many audiences that live, work or just pass through Vallila.
Public Paper is a project from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki and a collaboration between PRAXIS – Master's Programme in Exhibition Studies and the Printmaking Study Programme. Each project group consists of both art students and students from the curatorial programme.

Idea and general curating: Pontus Kyander, lecturer, Praxis – MFA programme for exhibition studies.
