Chinatown : The Gateway
An interpretation of Michel de Certeau's Place and Space
This typographic book project demonstrates Michel de Certeau’s notions of “Place” and “Space” of a city. I have taken Michel’s ideas and created an interpretation of Honolulu’s Chinatown. With this notions of Place and Space, I see Chinatown as a gateway – a constant flow of entry and exit of Honolulu’s inhabitants. Opening, taking a deeper look into the gateway (cover), reveals the flow of traffic of its people. One side (place), shows the flow of entering immigrants gradually making its way towards assimilation as they exit. On the other side (space), also expresses the re-entry of sojourners and expatriates moving towards their return to Asia.
