The Death of Klinghoffer

After 21 years The Death of Klinghoffer get’s it London premier at ENO. Much of the controversy of the original La Monnaie production has been done away with our approach to the show.

We felt the music was a meditation on the issues surrounding Israel and Palestine, not a divisive attempt to take sides in the debate. We built a world of solid concrete, taking our lead from the west bank wall and sandy desert, using video to bring the world of the Achille Lauro, the ship that was hijacked to the stage and to transform the concrete to the watery poetry of the ocean and the vast expanses of desert inherent in the music.

We spent several days filming on a ship of the coast of Gran Canaria with three cameras, 1 for each wall in the set, shooting in sync to bring a vast ocean scape to the stage. We also filmed in the mountainous desert in the centre of the island to get some interesting landscapes.

Due to the moving nature of the set we used 9 Panasonic PT DS110X projectors in various positions and blends around the stage and auditorium driven by 4 Catalysts and a Road Hog, programmed by the wonderful Jane Michelmore.
