Originario del Pacífico Sur, su nombre deriva del latín “incrustare”, debido a la acción adherente que sobre este inerte caparazón, originario de los ya extintos erizos marinos, tienen diversas tapas de polipropileno y aluminio, provenientes de la superficie y las que le otorgan vida. Estudios científicos han concluido que en su interior se gesta una silenciosa acumulación de envolturas de polietileno, dando origen a sus particulares extremidades con las cuales se desplaza entre las mareas, permitiéndole reunirse con pares de su misma especie. Los deshechos de alimentación humana durante el día a orillas del mar, son la materia prima que da origen al poliprotilenius. El ciclo vital de esta especie es de apróximadamente 60 años.
