The concept for this piece was to draw a parallel between a contemporary punk band and the Futurist movement of 1909. It focuses mainly on the subject of “the beauty of speed” from the Futurist Manifesto. I wanted to convey this using only variations in line weight and text weight.

The music also makes the connection through song titles and subject matter. The title of the album “The Shape of Punk to Come” suggests that the artist is moving punk in a new direction, the same way the futurists were redefining art. The track “New Noise” directly relates to the noise music produced by the futurists.

The form represents a speedometer with a structure that is influenced by Carlo Carra and Josef Muller-Brockmann. My goal was to draw from history, yet still feel contemporary.
