I. CONTEXTUAL STATEMENT
The inconsistency of human beings has always intrigued me. These creatures trying to reaffirm their rationality have been developing technology to such an extent that it drives our species away from their natural behaviour. Since the steam machine was invented it has become harder and harder for society to pause and admire art. My creative proposal is based on extensive research to go back to basics, reassessing aesthetics, as well as encouraging people understand the holistic and social nature
of art.
Technology has turned into a double-edge sword, on the one hand provides for easy every day solutions, but on the other, sets limitations to our thinking, feeling, and emotional capacities. For example, Photoshop is used to create a perfect skin; mobile phones are meant to improve communication but in fact end up reducing the abilities of talking face to face, amongst others. As an artist I have made a conscious effort to learn natural techniques, both in goldsmithing and painting, intending to understand the behaviour of different materials. Therefore, creating works of art that expose the loss of human authenticity and regain their essence.
Maybe it is our responsibility as artists that people have less time to admire art. I have heard public expressing lack of comprehension, or even a preference in watching on television news to witness tragedies. Perhaps the society expects a better and peaceful world in arts, and nowadays expressions are not responding to that request. After holding back for nearly a century of Duchamp´s influence, I strongly feel that art needs to be reinvented. The artistic message I am pursuing attempts to rescue aesthetic values.
The intention is to simplify messages, trying to break the mould going beyond social, cultural and temporary barriers. This is what led me to write my advertising dissertation Kali Crew focused on street art, as it has a strong message, with a quality of not being restricted to just a few, but forcing people to interact with art. You cannot avoid street art, it is indeed a manifestation much more accessible and holistic.
My works are versatile, always trying to make people stop and think beyond their daily routines. Thus, the objective being sought is to regain human essence to aim for peace, happiness and understanding. This may sound ambitious, but having a strong, persevering and positive attitude in life, it may help in accomplishing your dreams.
