The 1Word | Dilla Project exists to recognize the legacy left by the late James Dewitt Yancey aka JDilla. The internationally renowned hip hop producer was coming of age in 2006 when he lost his battle against Lupus at the age of 32. Dilla’s influence on hip hop extends far beyond the underground hip hop scene in Detroit, but there is nowhere in the world where his legacy is so revered. The following Polaroids and the 1Word chosen by each artist when asked "how do you define J Dilla in one word?", are a testament to Dilla's influence on hip hop. The project is in many ways my own Ruff Draft at this point, with the intent to reach out to more artists, producers, and fans who have felt Dilla's influence. I never had the chance to meet J Dilla but my hope is that in some way, his influence on me is reflected through my efforts. Rest In Peace Jay Dee.
