Toquilla Branding

About Toquilla
Nestled within the beauty of northern Peru lies the town of Catacaos, home to one of the world’s most ancient and honoured weaving communities. For centuries, these expert weavers have devoted themselves to the art of weaving intricate goods from the fibres of the prized toquilla palm. The result of their efforts is a range of handmade products that are more than just hats and baskets, they are pieces of art.

The Challenge
Our challenge was to create an identity that embodies Toquilla’s rich fusion of modern design and time-honoured tradition, ready for entry into higher-end contemporary retail spaces. In a world where small-batch, handcrafted products are coming to the forefront of consumer culture, it was essential this brand stand out.

The Approach
The intensive technique for preparing and processing the toquilla palm begins with the harvest of the plant, which is then blanched, beaten, and dyed. We were inspired by the dedication and patience of the master weavers to this process. We also took cues from the intense and vivid colours used by the artisans. These unique qualities are at the core of the brand, and it was important that this be conveyed in an identity that speaks to a sophisticated and modern market.
