Word Illustration

Here, I chose two fairly abstract concepts and then mused over a collection of words helpful in describing my main idea. Choosing three words from my larger list for inspiration, I then designed three sketches. Finally, I decided on which design I would finalize and did so.

The first image represents my thought process and final design for the word disconnected. My first sketch depicts a very literal sense of the word, as the letters are created from an electrical cord and its ends do not meet, causing it to be disconnected. My second sketch (which is the initial version of the final product) involves the top of the word disconnected being separated from the bottom of it. When finalizing this concept, I decided to add broken edges to the separation points to appeal to the emotional meaning of the word. My final sketch involves the word being cut in half with scissors.

The second image represents my thoughts for the word freedom. Freedom has many meanings and those meanings can be personal, general, or concrete. My first sketch for freedom includes a chain wrapped around the letters of the word. The padlock formally holding the chain together and binding freedom is unlocked, the key beside it. The second sketch (my initial sketch for the final design) depicts half of the word freedom imprisoned “behind bars” and the other half freely walking out of the jail cell. While this seems a very literal sense of the word, I felt that if an individual was unaware of the meaning of freedom, this imagery would best explain it. Finally, my third sketch includes the word freedom housed inside of a mouth, on the tongue. This sketch was made to imply freedom of speech.
