Playa Malt Liquor
Playa OG Club Malt
Product Concept, Brand Development and Package Design
This is a product concept, logo and package design that I did for a package design course at the School of Visual Arts in New York City in the Fall of 2011.

Over the years, malt liquor has become synonymous with rebellious counter culture like hip hoppers, skaters, and just hard core street drunks. There's a handful of old-school brands that still get consumed. Its affiliation with the street gives it cred, but no one has ever attempted to reinvent malt liquor and capitalize on the gestalt of the product category, while bringing it up a notch.

Playa OG Club Malt is an upscale brand of malt liquor for people that want to hit it hard— at the club, at the crib—whatever—but want to look like they also have a job.

Instead of the usual 40 ouncer, Playa comes in 22 oz cans, aka “The Duece-Deuce”. The top screws off to reveal a wide mouth opening for more efficient drinking. One poker chip pushes out through the center of each cap to make a nice collectible.

The pages from my sketchbook below shows some of my thought processes as I was working through this problem. (Pardon the cynicism in places.)
