Icona - PET Bottle Design

Icona is a commissioned work by Peacocktail Creative Pvt. Ltd. (an Australian start-up) I was fortunate enough to bag as a student. The project brief was to create an 'iconic' bottle for the Indian market keeping 3 constraints in mind - weight within market competition, at least 50% rib-less surface and maximum surface area possible for the label. The 1 month deadline meant quick ideation, rapid prototyping and simple yet elegantly designed and engineered bottle.

Keeping the Indian mentality of not crushing and re-using packaged mineral water bottles, I decided to instead make a structurally sturdy bottle that would not crush easily (also preventing over-spill on opening the seal), would be worth showing off at the dinner table and created a memorable drinking experience. This philosophy combined with the constraints led to the use of simple triangles and arches that ensured geometric strength, eliminated the use of ribs, had ergonomic and transportational advantages and gave the bottle the 'iconic' image it deserved. The arches also represent the 'Mughal Architecture' widely seen on famous Indian monuments.
Ideation : Exploring various forms to optimise strength, maximum surface
and minimise ribs.
Rapid Prototyping and Surface Analysis (after 3 revisions)
Renders with final details and label
20% more space efficient and upto 5X strength
as against segment leading bottles.
Strength and feel of a premium bottle in an ultra-light package.
Pre-production model
75% Label space
Maximum surface area for given volume (1 L)
User ergonomics testing. Triangular cross-section prevents crushing of bottle,
avoiding over-spilling when seal is opened.

Modelling Courtesy : Ishaan Dass, Kalyani Tupkary
Inspired by Indian culture of re-use, the bottle's design prevents crushing
and extends shelf-life whilst looking simple and elegant.
